Historic Porsche win

DAYTONA BEACH – Porsche Penske Motorsport has won the 62nd Rolex 24 at Daytona.

The German manufacturer’s last Daytona win came in 2010 and last overall win came in 2003.

Felipe Nasr, in the #7 Porsche Penske 963, held off the #31 Whelen Engineering Racing Cadillac V-Series.R of Tom Blomqvist, a two-time and defending race winner.

The two drivers fiercely battled with one another the last half hour before the Porsche emerged victorious over the Cadillac by 2.112 seconds.

The finish was not without confusion, as race control called for the white flag with two-and-a-half minutes remaining.

Dane Cameron, Matt Campbell and 2003 Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden earned their first overall Rolex 24 win with Nasr.

Porsche claimed its 23rd Daytona win and 19th overall Daytona 24-hour victory.

The win was the for Penske at the 24 since 1969.

Rounding out the GTP podium was the #40 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Acura ARX-06 of Louis Deletraz, Jordan Taylor, Jenson Button and Colton Herta.

The #18 Era Motorsport Oreca claimed the win in LMP2.

The #04 Crowdstrike Racing by APR ORECA finished a close second.

The #74 Riley ORECA came home third, after an intense battle with the #52 Inter Europol PR1 and #8 Tower 07 Gibsons.

Risi Competizione’s #62 Ferrari 296 GT3 took the GTD Pro class victory.

The #77 AO Racing Porsche took second while the #1 Paul Miller BMW finished third.
